SHAIN KHOSHBIN SELECTED AS MANAGING ATTORNEY FOR DEFENSE IN 2009 ABA HISTORICAL TRIAL

Shain Khoshbin was selected as the Managing Attorney for the defense team in the CLE Historical Trial at the 2009 American Bar Association's Annual Meeting held this year in Chicago, Illinois. The CLE event concerned the infamous “Insanity Trial of Mary Todd Lincoln.”

In 1875, President Abraham Lincoln’s widow - - Mary Todd Lincoln - - went on trial for insanity in Chicago. Ruled insane, she attempted suicide on the night of the verdict. For decades, writers and historians have debated Mrs. Lincoln’s case. Would she have fared differently if her case had been tried years later, or had a different defense attorney? In his book The Insanity File, historian Mark E. Neely, Jr. contended: “The history of the treatment of insanity in American law provides no real evidence that Mary Todd Lincoln's fate would have been different in modern times.”

For the first time, the audience competed in the Historical Trial this year. Mr. Khoshbin and trial attorney Carlin Phillips mentored the audience participants with trial themes and strategy, opening/closing statements, and direct/cross examinations. The Hon. George Leighton presided over the proceedings. In addition, live expert testimony was provided by psychologist Dr. Darlene Shelton, and attorney Nancy Schleifer - - author of A Warrant for Mrs. Lincoln. Trial consultant David Weinberg also offered trial themes and graphic evidence to both sides.

The continuing education course took place on Friday, July 31, 2009, at the Hyatt Regency Chicago.
