Maintaining a consistent staff leads to increased productivity and decreased training costs. Dallas employment lawyer Keith Clouse suggests the following ways an employer may be able to increase employee retention: • Provide competitive salaries. Although money may not be the only factor an employee considers, it is an important one. • Promote from within to both encourage employees to work hard and to demonstrate the employer’s commitment to its employees. • Cross-train employees. Cross-training encourages employees to learn more about an employer’s business and facilitates flexibility. • Empower employees by giving them as much autonomy as they show they can handle. • Base bonus pay on both individual and team performance goals to encourage all-around success and a team-oriented dynamic. • Maintain an open-door policy and encourage employees to bring suggestions for improvement to a superior. • Praise employees when deserved—privately and in front of other employees and customers. • Show you care: Send flowers when an employee is ill. Reward an employee’s extra effort with an afternoon off or a restaurant gift certificate. Invite professional speakers, such as financial advisors or career coaches, to conduct lunch-time presentations. • Promote fellowship among employees by hosting monthly birthday parties, treating employees and their families to a day at an amusement park, or periodically ordering lunch in (without a scheduled agenda).
